WILDLIFE
Togo is home to numerous national parks and protected areas created with the aim of preserving its rich biodiversity. Among the most notable are the Abdoulaye Wildlife Reserve, Fazao-Malfakassa National Park, Fosse aux Lions National Park, Oti Valley Wildlife Reserve, Kéran National Park, and the Sarakawa and Djamdé reserves. These natural areas cover nearly 14% of Togo's territory, although today less than 10% of the country remains truly accessible to wildlife.Nevertheless, these parks and reserves offer magnificent opportunities for adventure, whether through half-day safaris, birdwatching excursions, or walks in the heart of unspoiled landscapes. After your explorations, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the crystal-clear waters of Togo's waterfalls, nestled in spectacular natural surroundings.Beyond their natural wealth, these areas also allow you to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the country's five regions. For example, you can visit the traditional houses of Koutammakou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for their typical architecture and symbolic value. These dwellings offer a real window into the lifestyle and traditions of the local people.
In Togo, travelers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a vibrant calendar of cultural festivals that punctuate the country's life throughout the year. These celebrations highlight the diversity of traditions, beliefs, and rituals unique to each community.
Among the most iconic events is the Epe Ekpe festival in Glidji, which marks the Mina New Year in an atmosphere of spirituality and popular fervor. In the Kabye mountains, initiation rites perpetuate ancestral customs, symbolizing passage and the transmission of values.
Harvest festivals, such as the yam festival in Bassar, are moments of gratitude, sharing, and collective joy, celebrating the abundance of the land and the strength of agricultural traditions. Visitors may also be fascinated by the spectacular fire and horse dances, performed with passion by the Tem people, true expressions of a living heritage.
Each of these festivals offers an authentic window into the Togolese soul, allowing visitors to experience unique moments and leave with unforgettable memories at the heart of African culture.
Every year, in the village of Glidji, the Guen ethnic group, also known as the Mina, gather to celebrate the Epe Ekpe festival, one of Togo's most iconic cultural events. This festival is much more than just a celebration: it marks the Mina New Year, a time for family reunions, prayers, and sacred rituals. The highlight of the festival is an ancestral ritual in which a traditional priest goes into the sacred forest to search for the famous mystical stone. The color of this stone is a sign of things to come for the year ahead:a blue stone heralds abundant rains and prosperous harvests,a red stone portends tension and conflict,a black stone is interpreted as a sign of famine or disease, while a white stone symbolizes luck, peace, and abundance. In the heart of the village, the celebration reaches its climax in an enchanting atmosphere: drums resound, songs rise, and the faces of the participants light up in the glow of a sacred fire. To the rhythm of the drums, the dancers enter a trance, swaying with an almost supernatural energy. Then, in a striking moment, they advance toward the glowing embers, walk on them, brush against them, or even bring them to their mouths without showing the slightest pain. This impressive spectacle is as fascinating as it is puzzling. Where does their resilience come from? Is it the strength of courage, the power of faith, or the mystical protection of the fetishes they carry? Between spirituality, tradition, and mystery, the Epe Ekpe festival embodies all the symbolic depth and ritual power of Togolese culture.
☀️ CLIMATE OF TOGO
Togo enjoys a warm and pleasant tropical climate throughout the year, with variations depending on the region of the country. In the south, around Lomé and the Atlantic coast, the climate is hot and humid, tempered by sea breezes. There are two rainy seasons—from April to July and then from September to October—separated by dry, sunny periods that are ideal for enjoying the beaches. The central region, which is more hilly and green, has a prolonged rainy season from March to October, followed by a dry season from November to February. Temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 72°F to 93°F.In the north, the climate becomes drier and hotter, typical of the Sudano-Sahelian zones. Rainfall occurs mainly between May and October, while the dry season, from November to April, is marked by the Harmattan, a hot, dusty wind from the Sahara. Thanks to this climatic diversity, Togo offers its visitors a wide variety of landscapes and experiences—from sunny beaches to lush forests and golden savannas.
👥 POPULATION OF TOGO
Togo has a population of around 9 million, spread across a narrow strip of land stretching from the Gulf of Guinea to the edge of the Sahel. This small West African country is notable for its great ethnic and cultural diversity, truly reflecting the richness of the African continent.
There are more than 40 ethnic groups, the main ones being the Ewe (mainly in the south), the Kabyè (in the center and north), as well as the Mina, Tem, Gurma, Bassari, and Kotokoli, each bringing their own traditions, language, and way of life. This mosaic of peoples coexists harmoniously, united by a deep sense of sharing, hospitality, and solidarity.
The country's official language is French, inherited from the colonial period, but many local languages are also spoken, notably Ewe and Kabyè, which are recognized as national languages.
Togo is also a young and dynamic country: more than half of its population is under 25 years old. This dynamism can be felt in cities such as Lomé, the lively and cosmopolitan capital, where modernity, creativity, and living traditions coexist.
Throughout the country, visitors are welcomed with warmth and friendliness, two values deeply rooted in Togolese culture.
